Medicinal herbs were administered to 10 cases of arterial hypertension by systems review according to differential diagnosis based on the guideline of traditional herbal medicine. Systolic blood pressure was decreased within two weeksof the treatment in all 10 cases . After 4 weeks of the treatment, the mean blood pressure of the 10 patients decreased from 171.6土15.80 mmHg to 126.0土7.26 mmHg. The mean diastolic blood pressure also decreased from 99.4土12.07 mmHg to 78.3土7.42 mmHg .
We have shown that the patients with arterial hypertension were successfully treated with the traditional herbal medicine, by classifying the cases according to the guidance of the holism of the traditional herbal medicine. Interestingly, each patient with arterial hypertension showed functional abnormalities in multiple organs or systems. In addition,
the functional abnormalities differed from patient to patient. In this study, each patients with multiple affected systems were treated by the multiple recipes which were expected to be effective against each of these abnormal systems. By these
systematic treatments, arterial blood pressure was decreased and the functional abnormalities found in multiple systems disappeared. These results imply that arterial hypertension is a systematic disorder of multiple causes. Therefore, the systematic, holistic treatment is required for
restoring the pathological conditions, which cause arterial hypertension. With
the systematic herbal therapy, blood pressure remains lowered for many years after discontinuation of the treatment.
